4H Days

  Life in my 4H Days

Growing up in Olivenhain I was surrounded by farms and stables. I knew from a young age, that livestock was something I wanted to be involved with and to participate in on some level. I was introduced to 4H in third grade, and this was the year I got my first goat, I named, Lilah. Our 4H meetings were held at the Olivenhain Old Town Meeting Hall. This is the most prominent landmark in Olivenhain. It represents a lot of history of the early colonists who settled in the area.  The meeting halls old wooden floors were filled with folding chairs, kids with their chickens, dogs in dog crates, sheep on leashes, trailors and pick up trucks with various animals which filled the dirt parking lot. It was the place we gathered to talk about upcoming fairs and meetings.

In those early years, life was busy showing Lila in many local 4H shows. My favorite was the local county fair that started off my summer every year. It wasn’t long before I added another goat, I named, Daisy, to my back yard farm. This became my goat herd, and I enjoyed sharing them with friends who came to visit. My experience with 4H taught me a lot through out the years. I learned about the care and life of many animals that I enjoyed raising and a lot about others as well.  It also taught me many things about myself and responsibilities.

The memories I now carry on as an adult, are hopes I have for my kids some day.  I hope to share many same experiences and more. My 4H experience  was  the best building block compnet of growing up, and something ill cherish forever.
